08/06/10 – Foraging For Food

This morning, after having a bit of a lie-in and attempting to repay our sleep debt from the day before, we decided to head down into Sevierville to get something to eat for breakfast and to do a spot of food shopping as there was literally nothing to eat in our cabin.

We firstly went to a place called Flap Jack’s Pancake Cabin for breakfast, I’ve never seen such a place back in England and it was an interesting looking dining establishment judging by the photos and write-ups from leaflets we picked up in Knoxville airport last night so we thought we’d give it a try.

WOW! is all I can say! Lucy had a 4-stack of pancakes covered with some pecans and maple syrup, I opted for a similar stack but with eggs and bacon and a jar (yes a jar!) of chocolate milk. Needless to say, we didn’t realise how big these meals were until we got them so we couldn’t quite finish it all. The waitress that served us – a charming woman named Donna – was fascinated by our accents and came over about 3 times to ‘check our meals were OK’ but really just wanted to hear us speak!

Afterwards we went to a supermarket called Food City and got some supplies for our cabin. We’ll have to go back again at some point soon though, as we had forgotten to get some dishwasher tablets – we could do the washing up manually as the people that operate the cabins here kindly left us a bottle of “Ajax” washing up liquid, but sadly there are no sponges in our cabin so we don’t really have a way of doing the washing up at the moment!

Shopping for food in America turned out to be quite exciting! We couldn’t believe the choice of sweets and drinks. We decided to try some things that we’d never heard of. We bought some things called “Pasta Para Duros” which are a traditional Latin snack. They look like orange plastic wheels that you put into the microwave for 35 seconds and they puff up into crisps. We also bought some potato pie which which is really nice – which is a good job as we have loads of it left in the fridge!

We watched the American version of “The Office” and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. All of the adverts are for medical insurance, food, beauty products and accident claim attorneys.

We played 2 games of pool in the games room of the cabin. It was a draw – the table is totally on the wonk which made it a more unpredictable match! We also tried out the hot tub – it was hot! I didn’t last very long as I started to feel really dizzy – it also reminded me of being steamed over a kettle when I was younger for my asthma!

07/06/10 – We Made It!

This is a photo of us waiting at Birmingham Airport. I was totally convinced that I was going to be sick for the whole of the journey, so I took sickness tablets and wore those pressure band thingies around my wrists. Flying was a whole new experience for me and I’m so glad that Sam was with me or I would have been totally lost instantly – he had to stop me from walking into Arrivals; explaining that we were departing, not arriving!! …. it was very early in the morning!

Once we had boarded the plane to Paris I prepared myself for feeling ill – I located the sick bag and waited, and waited and then realised that I was ok! It was such a relief and it meant that I could enjoy looking out at all the clouds, fields and sea. Once we got to Paris we boarded a plane to Atlanta where I took full advantage of the fact that I could eat and had pizza and ice cream! Our plane was late, so we missed the connection to Knoxville. Fortunately we were quickly put onto the next plane and arrived at about 9.30pm local time.

I think that we were both quite suprised that our luggage made it to the right place. We collected it and picked up our hire car. The drive from Knoxville to the cabin was about an hour. Sam did a good job as we were both tired and grumpy. He managed to drive a strange car on the wrong side of the road, in the dark, after staying awake for 20 hours. We were making sure that we were doing the right speed (45mph) when we went past a police car – as soon as we went past, the Sheriff  followed us and pulled us over. We were both scared, but remembered to stay in the car ( we’ve watched lots of Police Stop! on telly ). He told us that when a police car is on the hard shoulder you must move out of the lane next to the hard shoulder – this is a legal requirement! ( only in Tennessee though! ) We pleaded ignorance and said that we were English, which worked and we were let off with a warning. Welcome to Tennessee!

We eventually made it to the cabin and went straight to bed!

Thank You

Cheers to everyone that could make it to the wedding & reception, it was great having you all there to be a part of our very special day!

We’re just in the middle of packing for Tennessee now – so I’d better go and get that done otherwise I will probably forget to pack a load of things and have many “d’oh!” moments when we unpack!
