08/06/10 – Foraging For Food
This morning, after having a bit of a lie-in and attempting to repay our sleep debt from the day before, we decided to head down into Sevierville to get something to eat for breakfast and to do a spot of food shopping as there was literally nothing to eat in our cabin.
We firstly went to a place called Flap Jack’s Pancake Cabin for breakfast, I’ve never seen such a place back in England and it was an interesting looking dining establishment judging by the photos and write-ups from leaflets we picked up in Knoxville airport last night so we thought we’d give it a try.
WOW! is all I can say! Lucy had a 4-stack of pancakes covered with some pecans and maple syrup, I opted for a similar stack but with eggs and bacon and a jar (yes a jar!) of chocolate milk. Needless to say, we didn’t realise how big these meals were until we got them so we couldn’t quite finish it all. The waitress that served us – a charming woman named Donna – was fascinated by our accents and came over about 3 times to ‘check our meals were OK’ but really just wanted to hear us speak!
Afterwards we went to a supermarket called Food City and got some supplies for our cabin. We’ll have to go back again at some point soon though, as we had forgotten to get some dishwasher tablets – we could do the washing up manually as the people that operate the cabins here kindly left us a bottle of “Ajax” washing up liquid, but sadly there are no sponges in our cabin so we don’t really have a way of doing the washing up at the moment!

Shopping for food in America turned out to be quite exciting! We couldn’t believe the choice of sweets and drinks. We decided to try some things that we’d never heard of. We bought some things called “Pasta Para Duros” which are a traditional Latin snack. They look like orange plastic wheels that you put into the microwave for 35 seconds and they puff up into crisps. We also bought some potato pie which which is really nice – which is a good job as we have loads of it left in the fridge!
We watched the American version of “The Office” and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. All of the adverts are for medical insurance, food, beauty products and accident claim attorneys.
We played 2 games of pool in the games room of the cabin. It was a draw – the table is totally on the wonk which made it a more unpredictable match! We also tried out the hot tub – it was hot! I didn’t last very long as I started to feel really dizzy – it also reminded me of being steamed over a kettle when I was younger for my asthma!
